These Independent Financial Advisors are more than just number-crunchers. Getting to know people’s financial situations means getting to know people. They know the best advice is long-term advice, understanding, over time,

a client’s individual hopes and goals as they navigate life’s ups and downs.

We defined an honest positioning –
a human and personable organisation which focuses on the people, not the numbers – and a proposition outlining the benefit of a long-term approach:

‘In relationship, we’re stronger’.

Then we illustrated this as a fantastical journey, with one continuous image condensing some of life’s – and finance’s – most extreme circumstances into one 16 page brochure. The protagonist is accompanied every step of the way,

by their trusted advisor, taking the strain in a number of ways.

The twist in the tail is that the illustration – and the adventure – isn’t finite.
It’s circular. The image on the back cover seamlessly joining the front for the journey to begin again.

Bective Leslie Marsh Corporate Brochure

We Know Property.

This message is the core of the Bective brand and runs throughout their corporate communications. We needed to show how true this statement. The vibrant use of tip ins helps retain the feeling that Bective are an organisation that know what they are talking about and are not afraid to shout about in in a fun but professional way.

You Know Us.

Whilst the brochure is an opportunity to talk business, it also allows a great platform to tell the stories of the people who work at bective. Humanise them. The use of some beautiful photography in the locations which they work offset against the vibrant business messaging brings both sides of the brand to life.

Both Are Two

Doing the YMCA. Drawing London. Thinking big and staying small. Breathing life into Estate Agents. And then shooting them on the streets of Chelsea, Kensington and Notting Hill. Finding daleks in unexpected places. Having adventures in finance. Telling it like it is. Learning things the hard way. Respecting our elders. Putting our money where our mouth is. Giving power to the people. Building a studio. Literally. Getting coffee on tap. Having our cake. And eating it.

What follows are some highlights from the first two years of BothAssociates.

Aston & Magill Website

We worked with Aston & Magill to capture the distinct ‘neighbourhood kitchen and coffee bar’ feel that everyone loves. Using atmospheric photography, copy threaded with dry wit and humour, we have created a website that helps not only convey the passion and love that A&M have for their product, but tells the story of this distinct café around the corner.

Bective Leslie Marsh We Love Christmas

Christmas is a time to show people you care.

For Bective Leslie Marsh we had some festive fun in showing they care; we designed this concertina christmas card showing off the festive frivolity in the areas they work. Our now developing collection of illustrations and characters allowing us to play and put a spin on traditional thinking of what the office part looks like in these areas. From the punks of the kings road joining forces with the Chelsea pensioners in a rendition of God Save the Queen, to our favourite Dalek tipsy on punch causing trouble in Brook Green.

YMCA Annual Report

South London YMCA are one of the largest in the country, historically covering Croydon, Lambeth, Southwark, and Lewisham, and now extending their reach to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. But broader still are the range of people who benefit from the range of services they provide. This year’s annual report gave us the opportunity to tell the story of the people with whom SLYMCA works and who work for them; breaking down stereotypes, both of homelessness and the kinds of activities with which they are engaged.

Our Annual Report.

The newspaper format lends itself to this grassroots approach to telling the story of the SLYMCA. It’s a straightforward medium, stripped of pretence, yet the larger format also allowed us to transform the portraits into something which conveys the quiet heroism of those who are striving to improve their lives, even when the odds seem overwhelmingly stacked against them.

Bective Leslie Marsh Brook Green Guide

This is first in a series of bespoke guides to the areas in which Bective Leslie Marsh operate. Each will be designed to reflect something of the area itself – in this case:

We know Brook Green.

Once home to William Morris’s Kelmscott Press, inspiration was drawn from the highly decorative border designs found in editions like the Kelmscott Chaucer, and Morris’s own typeface ‘Golden Type’ was used on the cover.

Inside, information about the history of the area is combined with an introduction to some of the best shops, restaurants and schools in the area and a useful directory of everything from post offices to pubs. The centre spread features another of our stunning illustrated maps, featuring the choice picks of local establishments.

Candid Brand Identity

Sometimes the smallest, simplest of jobs bring a disproportionate amount of satisfaction. Candid is one such case. An identity for a new venture, where some of the design industry’s leading figures advise and mentor small and growing creative businesses.

We’ve created, grown and transformed some of the world’s most successful creative companies. Now we’d like to help you build yours.

Candid wanted something conversational yet serious, playful yet businesslike, straight talking but with warmth and wit. Harder still, this was design for designers.

We created a simple, bespoke logotype, and the very basic range of applications, and watch with interest to see how the business develops.

Bective Leslie Marsh Brand Identity

Bective Leslie Marsh are London Estate Agents with a fine pedigree and a great track record. But the way they presented themselves was no longer doing justice to the service they offer.

The proposition was a direct expression of the fact that many of Bective’s Agents have lived and worked in the area for years – sometimes decades, they are career professionals and well-known locals. So while many agents claim to know their local areas better than anyone, we could go one better – the locals know Bective’s people too.

We Know Property | You Know Us

Their bespoke, individualistic attitude was expressed through a distinctly quirky tone of voice and an unconventional approach to every aspect of the project. We created a giant, illustrated map, which folds into a glue-less, staple-less folder. We allowed each agent to choose three of the almost 200 illustrations from the map to appear on the backs of their business cards.

A result like this is only possible with a courageous and visionary client prepared to take a risk and get behind the ‘crazy idea’. We’re enormously grateful to Peter Rickenberg and his team for enabling us to deliver such a uniquely joy-filled brand.

Bective Leslie Marsh Brand Advertising

Our rebranding of London Estate Agent Bective Leslie Marsh was accompanied by an extensive brand advertising campaign, both to raise awareness of the new brand and reinforce the message behind it.

We took the people who work at Bective Leslie Marsh out of their offices and onto the streets and parks in which they work. Using a sophisticated ’tilt-and-shift’ technique we placed the focus onto the person, placing them at the centre of the community they know and love.

We know Notting Hill. Notting Hill knows Fiona.

The photographs have a timeless quality – the people of Bective Leslie Marsh providing reassuring continuity amongst the hustle and bustle of daily life in West London.

Bective Leslie Marsh Website

A key part of the Bective Leslie Marsh rebrand was how it translated online. We know the power a website has in allowing people to understand the brand and the kind of properties they market. We needed to create a website which functioned well in showing off the properties on their books and placed the emphasis on people’s ability to search in the way they want. We thought hard about how, where, and when people might want to use their site and it became clear that the it needed to be adaptive and easy to use on tablets and mobiles.

“A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.”
Douglas Adams

In other words, while the site serves as both a functional search engine for potential buyers as well as powerful marketing tool for the business, we also worked hard to maintain the sense of joy which permeates every expression of the Bective Brand.

Colten Care Home Identities

Colten Care are a family owned and run business, which build and run 19 care homes in the South West offering a range of care services from respite to dementia to palliative. Each home has a distinct personality and character and a fair degree of autonomy, while offering a consistently high level of care, centralised support and leading edge thinking provided by the group.

Our challenge was to create both difference and unity, which we achieved by a bespoke identity for each home, with colours, typefaces art direction and copy approach, executed within a common set of frameworks and templates, to give a family feel.

Colten Care. Together.

We achieved a practical, cost effective solution which also communicates a quality proposition.
The best of Both, perhaps.

Aston & Magill Brand building

Aston & Magill are our local coffee shop and the people who fuel – literally – the creativity at BothAssociates. They’re the genuine article: passionate about great food, locally, ethically sourced ingredients and really, really good coffee. Creative in the kitchen and great fun out of it, they want to be the hub of the local community, but they were struggling to articulate their proposition to the people in the area.

We wrote and designed them A&Manifesto. Outlining in 12 statements, what they believe and why they do things the way they do.

We believe that a coffee shop should have a personality, not a FTSE ranking.

Business is booming and their excellent coffee is ensuring there’s much, much more to come.

Mission Direct Exhibition Stand

Mission Direct are a charity that enables ordinary people to have extraordinary experiences, building homes and community projects in the developing world. Exhibiting at Christian festivals, they find themselves competing with a vast array of organisations for the attention of an audience short of time and overloaded with information.

We focussed on what sets Mission Direct apart. They are not a charity that primarily asks people to give. They are a charity that invites people to GO. We focussed on this in the most dramatic and single-minded way possible:

The word GO, in three dimensions, two and a half meters high and bright yellow.

And with GO appearing in the bible a staggering 1542 times (compared to “stay” featuring a paltry 62 times) it’s as good a biblical mandate as you’re ever likely to find.

We believe in Both.

It’s said that when you wear a nice suit you walk taller. BothAssociates have had a similar effect on our business – we’re more creative with our cooking and more determined than ever to keep innovating. They’ve been truly inspirational.

Sometimes you work with a company whose special qualities set them apart. Both are one such. They take their role as designers very seriously. Rachel and her team care about design and how it can make a difference – I strongly recommend you meet them.

Rachel is a rigorous thinker, the kind of designer who won’t put pen to paper until she understands the business case and can do something that adds value, not to her portfolio, but her client’s business. She’s considerate and loyal too. Use without caution.

Working with Rachel and her team
is always a pleasure. Their enthusiasm
and commitment to a project is perfectly
matched by their expertise, creativity
and ability to deliver.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Rachel since college.
The Rachel I met then was a curious, tenacious and
talented designer. Years later when I joined SAS, I was
reminded just what an intelligent, hard working and
brilliant designer she is.
